I have to confess that when I first started seeing ads for free Wi-Fi at cafes and hotels I wondered what the big deal was. Actually I wondered what Wi-Fi was and whether it was anything I needed. We all remember the commercials for cell phones that asked Can you hear me now? and that gives us a clue about wifi cell phones. Wi-Fi enabled cell phones also known as cellular internet phones can switch between conventional cellular connections and Wi-Fi connections eliminating the very aggravating dropped calls.

Cell phone reception in very dense urban areas is often poor. Concrete and steel buildings can block the radio frequencies between cell phones and outdoor repeaters. You may be chatting away while walking outdoors and experience drop-outs when you enter a building. If you have a wifi cell phone and enter a Wi-Fi equipped building, the call will automatically transfer to the Wi-Fi network seamlessly. If you are in any area where maintaining a reliable connection is difficult, a wifi cell phone will help tremendously. People who live in remote areas will appreciate this.

Some people think that Wi-Fi stands for wireless fidelity. You know that Hi-Fi stands for high fidelity, so wireless fidelity is a natural transition. The creator says it originally meant nothing at all and Wi-Fi was at first a marketing term. Wi-Fi use was expected to double between 2009-2011. Three hundred million wifi cell phones are expected to ship in 2011, up from one hundred forty-four million this year. Thats quite an increase and 90% of all cell phones are expected to be wife equipped by 2014.

Where would you use these wifi cell phones? There has been a huge increase in hot spots like internet cafes and coffee shops and in office buildings. Eight U.S. airlines offer Wi-Fi on more than five hundred flights and this will expand to the entire fleet within two years. Subway stations already have Wi-Fi and it is expected to expand to the tunnels as well very soon. As you can see it will soon be rare not to be able to stay connected no matter where you happen to be. Some people cannot bear to be out of touch for even a second. I am not one of those. I relish solitude at times and do not want to be bothered by a ringing phone, but for those of you whose phones are your umbilical cord, wifi cell phones will ensure youre never out of touch.
